Review of the Sunlinq Folding Portable Solar Panel Charger 6.5W 12W 25W

Global Solar Sunlinq 6.5 Watt solar charger

Description: It’s a high capacity Li-ion battery and a 6.5W solar panel. The panel is lightweight. It’s handy for charging a huge range of small electronics.

Uses: Ideal for hiking and all outdoor activity lovers, its connectors make it able to recharge many mobile phones, PDA, PC Phones, Digital cameras, MP3 players and other mobile audio devices.

What I Liked: The panel is powerful instead of its small and light dimensions.

What Needs Improvement: As most of other brand panels, it has not an internal battery to let store the sun power.

Ratings in Details

Package & Design: It’s a very simple charger…just a solar panel and cigarette lighter or 12V adaptors.

Installation: One problem is that the only power output option is a cigarette lighter, most MP3 players and cameras don’t have one.

Price: In respect to its power and compared to the pther solar chargers of the same wattage is a good price

Installation: Nearly 300 dollar are a guarantee of great performances, but for me this is too much considering it need an internal battery and don’t have a charge controller.

Performances: It can generate a 433 mA of current in full sunshine. The panel can output about 6.5 Watts at 12 Volts over 120 Degrees F on the panel surface. Typical recharge time: Cell Phone 2 to 3 hours; Digital Camera, PDA, MP3 Player, Portable Video Game 2 to 4 hours; 4 AA Batteries 4 to 6 hours; Digital Camcorder 2 to 5 hours; Power sports/Auto/RV Battery trickle charge/maintain

Dimensions: It’s the slimmest charger. It measures 13mm at its thinnest point.

Usability: There’s no built-in indicator to show that it’s generating power. It’s water resistant and looks resilient for the outdoor. It doesn’t have a battery to store any generated power, you can only use the Sunlinq to charge gadgets in real-time.

Made in USA?: It’s made in Tucson, Arizona.

Accessories: A Solar charge controller and a Battery pack

I was excited to purchase this product.
However, I was not able to get anything to charge that it advertised it would charge. It actually seemed to drain the power from my pocket PC when I tried to charge it. I tried my daughter’s cell phone with the car charger plug, and it kept repeating the message on the phone that it was optimizing for charge, which it should do only once when first plugged in. This was in full intense sunlight, so it should have been getting full voltage, but it acted like it was surging off and on. When I tried to charge my cell phone with its car charger, it caused the phone to power off each time I plugged it in, and didn’t seem to give any charge after a reasonable time. It should have activated the charging icon on the screen.
I put the battery clamp attachment on it and tested the output voltage with a small volt meter. It was outputting 12 to 15 V, but I don’t know how to test the output AMPS. I am wondering if the amps are not outputting the stated amount or if the voltage regulator it says it has built in is backwards or something, draining my power? Any ideas? Thanks.

I’m wanting to take this apart for use in my senior project. Do you know the individual specs for each solar panel. Like do they eaxh put out 12 volts and .1A and are hooked up in parallel to get 12 V and .4 A, or 6.5 V in series….?
thanks
